Can someone please explain to me what homeostasis is ?

Im doing health and social studies at school and my first piece of course work is on Maslow's hierarchy of needs. On the section for phisical needs it says homeostasis is a basic need and i have no idea what that means so can anyone tell me it in a simple way. thanx muchly
