Why do some publishing companies forbid buyers from re-selling the books?

They cannot forbid you, as a consumer, from selling the book at a yard sale, or buying it used. If it was an advance reader's copy, it is not supposed to be sold commercially as a new legitimate edition of the book. You have nothing to feel guilty about.
